Profile and dimensions: the rail is a two-corrugation W-section rolled from IS 2062 steel, 3 mm thick nominal (2.67 mm on some specifications), supplied in 4.32 m panels that lap for splicing. Posts are typically an ISMC 150x75 channel at 2 m centre-to-centre, with a spacer/blocking piece between post and rail. The top of the rail sits about 700–760 mm above the carriageway.
Performance classification is where specifications most often go wrong. IRC:119 adopts the EN 1317 framework, which describes a barrier by three separate properties: (1) containment level — N1, N2 for cars, H1, H2 and above for heavy vehicles; (2) working width class — W1 (up to 0.6 m) to W8 (up to 3.5 m), the lateral deflection space the barrier needs; and (3) impact severity level — A, B or C, describing the effect on vehicle occupants. A W Beam is generally specified for normal-containment locations; always state the containment level, working width available at site, and severity your project requires.
Finish and fasteners: hot-dip galvanising to a 550 g/m² zinc coating per IS 4759 / IS 2629, and galvanised M16 splice and post bolts.
End treatment: every run must terminate in an approved end treatment — a fishtail or buried-in-backslope terminal, or a crash-tested energy-absorbing terminal — never a bare rail end.
