W Beam Crash Barrier Installation Method Statement
A step-by-step installation sequence for W Beam crash barriers that satisfies MoRTH site inspection — setting out, post driving, rail mounting, terminals and QC.
1. Setting out. Mark post positions from the drawing — typically 2 m centre-to-centre, reduced to 1 m at hazards — and confirm the offset from the carriageway edge. Set out transition points to bridges, medians and end terminals before any post goes in.
2. Post installation. Drive the mild-steel posts (commonly ISMC 150x75 channels) to the design embedment using a hydraulic post driver; in rocky strata, drill and grout. The product data for most Indian projects gives about 1.6 m embedment for a W Beam in normal soil. Check each post for plumb and top-level along the line.
3. Rail mounting. Fix the W-beam rails to the posts through the spacer/blocking pieces with galvanised M16 bolts. Lap adjacent rails by the panel design in the direction of traffic flow, so the leading edge presents a smooth face to approaching vehicles. Torque the bolts to specification.
4. Height and terminals. Set the top of the rail to the specified height (around 700–760 mm). Install approved end terminals — fishtail, buried-in-backslope, or a crash-tested energy-absorbing terminal. A bare, untreated rail end is dangerous and will fail inspection.
5. Inspection and QC. Verify post plumb and embedment, rail line and level, splice direction, bolt torque, zinc-coating integrity at cut/drilled points, reflector spacing (per IRC:35 / IRC:79), and continuity of transitions to bridge parapets.
