The 'W' in W Beam refers to the two-corrugation cross section of the rail. When a vehicle strikes it, the corrugated section deforms progressively, absorbing impact energy and smoothly redirecting the vehicle back along the carriageway rather than allowing it to cross the median or leave the road. Under MoRTH, the rail is rolled from hot-rolled steel conforming to IS 2062, with a nominal thickness of 3 mm (some project specifications permit 2.67 mm). The standard rail is supplied in 4.32 m lengths so that panels lap and bolt together into a continuous beam.
The rail is mounted on mild-steel posts — commonly an ISMC 150x75 channel or an equivalent Z/C section — spaced at 2 m centre-to-centre, reduced to 1 m at high-hazard locations such as sharp curves and bridge approaches. A spacer or blocking piece sits between the post and the rail to set the offset and allow controlled deflection. The top of the rail is typically held 700–760 mm above the carriageway.
Every steel component is hot-dip galvanised to a minimum zinc coating of 550 g/m² per IS 4759 / IS 2629, which is what gives the barrier its multi-decade corrosion life across India's coastal, plains and hill climates.
