W Beam Crash Barrier Containment and Working Width Explained

Two IRC:119 terms confuse most buyers — containment level and working width. Here is what each means for a W Beam crash barrier and why both belong in your spec.

Two IRC:119 terms trip up most crash-barrier buyers: containment level and working width. They describe different things, and a W Beam crash barrier specification needs both.

Containment level answers 'what can it stop?'. Following the EN 1317 framework adopted in IRC:119, barriers are graded by the vehicle mass and speed they are designed to contain and redirect: normal containment N1 and N2 for cars, and higher containment H1, H2 and above for buses and trucks. A W Beam is generally specified for normal-containment locations; heavier needs point to a Thrie beam.

Working width answers 'how much room does it need to work?'. When a vehicle hits a flexible barrier, the barrier deflects. Working width is the total lateral distance from the traffic face of the barrier to the maximum dynamic position of any part of the system during impact. IRC:119 classifies it W1 (up to 0.6 m) to W8 (up to 3.5 m). This matters enormously where a hazard, drop or structure sits close behind the barrier line — if the working width exceeds the clear space available, the deflecting barrier (or the vehicle) can still strike the hazard.

There is a third property worth naming: impact severity level (A, B or C), which describes the effect of the impact on vehicle occupants.

The practical takeaway: on your BOQ, state the required containment level, the working-width class the site can accommodate, and the severity level — not just 'W Beam crash barrier'. This is what lets the supplier confirm the post spacing and system that meets your site's constraints.
