Hot-Dip Galvanising of W Beam Crash Barriers: 550 g/m² Explained
The 550 g/m² zinc coating is what gives a W Beam crash barrier its decades of service. Here is what the number means and how it is verified.
What the number means. Galvanising immerses the finished steel component in molten zinc, forming a metallurgically bonded zinc layer that protects the steel both as a barrier and sacrificially — the zinc corrodes in preference to the steel. Coating mass is expressed in grams of zinc per square metre of surface; 550 g/m² is the accepted minimum for highway crash barriers, corresponding to a substantial coating thickness that delivers multi-decade corrosion life in Indian conditions.
Why 'after fabrication' matters. Galvanising is done after the rail is rolled, punched and the posts are cut and drilled, so that cut edges, bolt holes and weld zones are all coated. Galvanising first and cutting later would leave bare steel exposed at exactly the vulnerable points.
How it is verified. Coating mass is checked by test methods referenced in IS 2629 / IS 4759 (for example, stripping and weighing, or magnetic thickness gauging). A coating-mass report accompanies a compliant supply, and low coating mass is one of the most common causes of rejection at site inspection — especially in coastal and high-humidity corridors where corrosion is aggressive.
Field care. Any site drilling or cutting should be treated with an approved zinc-rich repair to restore protection at the exposed steel.
