W Beam Crash Barrier End Terminals and Transitions

A W Beam run is only as safe as its ends and joins. Here are the end-terminal and transition options and where each is used.

A W Beam crash barrier is only as safe as how it starts, ends and connects. Bare rail ends and abrupt joins turn a protective barrier into a hazard, which is why MoRTH and IRC:119 require designed end terminals and transitions.

Why the ends matter. An untreated, blunt rail end facing traffic can spear an impacting vehicle. Every run must therefore terminate in an approved end treatment.

End-terminal options. The common types are the fishtail terminal, which flares and blunts the rail end; the buried-in-backslope terminal, which turns the rail end into an embankment so it presents no exposed end to traffic; and crash-tested energy-absorbing terminals, which are engineered to decelerate an impacting vehicle at the barrier end. The choice depends on the site geometry, available backslope and the project specification.

Transitions. Where a W Beam meets a stiffer element — a Thrie beam run or a rigid concrete parapet — a designed transition manages the change in stiffness so a vehicle cannot pocket at the join. A W-to-Thrie transition uses a purpose-rolled section; a parapet transition nests/doubles the rail, reduces post spacing and anchors to the structure.

What inspectors check. Presence and type of end terminal, correct transition pieces (not field-cut splices), continuous rail height, lap direction and secure connection.

The fundamentals continue through terminals and transitions: IS 2062 steel, 3 mm rail, hot-dip galvanising to 550 g/m², galvanised bolts.

Ordering terminals and transitions with the main run — rather than as an afterthought — avoids the single most common cause of a barrier being installed but not accepted.
