Metal Beam Crash Barrier Steel Grade and Material: IS 2062
The steel behind a metal beam crash barrier matters as much as its shape. Here is what IS 2062 requires and why it appears on every mill test certificate.
IS 2062 covers hot-rolled medium and high-tensile structural steel. The grade commonly specified for crash barrier rails and posts is E250 (formerly Fe410), which fixes the minimum yield strength, tensile strength, elongation and, importantly, the impact and bend behaviour of the steel. These properties are what let the corrugated rail deform progressively on impact instead of tearing — the whole basis of how a metal beam barrier absorbs energy.
Why it matters at site: an under-grade or off-spec steel may look identical but will not deform predictably. That is why inspection regimes call for mill test certificates traceable to the coil, and sometimes independent testing of samples for thickness, yield and coating mass. Under-thickness rails and low coating mass are among the most common causes of rejection.
Thickness is part of the material story too. MoRTH specifies a 3 mm nominal rail (2.67 mm on some project specs); the tolerance band matters, because a rail thinner than specified changes the section's energy absorption.
Finish sits on top of the base steel: hot-dip galvanising to a 550 g/m² zinc coating per IS 4759 / IS 2629, applied after fabrication so cut edges and bolt holes are protected.
