Metal Beam Crash Barrier: MoRTH Clause 810 Requirements Explained
What MoRTH Section 800 clause 810 actually requires of a metal beam crash barrier — steel grade, rail thickness, post section, galvanising and finish.
Material comes first. The rail and posts are fabricated from structural steel conforming to IS 2062 (grade E250 / Fe410 is typical). This governs yield strength and weldability, and it is the figure a mill test certificate must confirm. Rail thickness under MoRTH is 3 mm nominal, with 2.67 mm accepted on some project specifications; the panel length is 4.32 m so that beams lap and splice into a continuous run.
Geometry is the second pillar. The metal beam crash barrier is not simply a strip of steel — the corrugation profile, the post section (commonly an ISMC 150x75 channel), the 2 m post spacing and the spacer/blocking piece are all part of the crash-tested design in IRC:119. Changing any of them changes how the barrier performs on impact, which is why site inspectors measure them.
Finish is the third. Clause 810 requires hot-dip galvanising, and the accepted benchmark is a 550 g/m² minimum zinc coating to IS 4759 / IS 2629. This is what protects the barrier through decades of exposure without painting.
