Metal Beam Crash Barrier Reflectors and Delineation per IRC
A crash barrier also guides drivers at night. Here is how reflectors and delineation on a metal beam barrier are specified under IRC guidance.
What reflectors do. Retro-reflective delineators fixed to the barrier posts or rail return vehicle headlight beams to the driver, marking the continuous line of the barrier. On a curving or undulating alignment this is critical — it lets a driver read the road ahead and stay within the carriageway well before any physical contact with the barrier is needed.
Colour and placement. Delineation colour and spacing follow the road-marking and delineation guidelines and the project specification — typically consistent colour along a carriageway edge, with median barriers carrying reflectors visible to the relevant carriageway(s). Spacing is set so the line of reflectors reads as continuous guidance at highway speeds; it is tightened on curves.
Durability. Because reflectors live in a harsh roadside environment — dust, spray, impact debris — their mounting and retro-reflective performance matter over time. They are fitted so they can be replaced without dismantling the barrier.
Inspection. Reflector presence, colour, spacing and secure fixing are checked as part of barrier acceptance; missing or wrongly spaced delineation is a common punch-list item.
The reflectors sit on the standard barrier build: IS 2062 steel rail and posts, 3 mm rail, hot-dip galvanising to 550 g/m².
