Highway Guard Rail Types and Profiles: W Beam vs Thrie Beam
The two guardrail profiles used on Indian highways, and how to choose between them for edge, median and structure locations.
The W beam profile has two corrugations. It is the workhorse of normal-containment locations: divided carriageways with mainly car traffic, urban arterials, medians on straight alignments and embankments of moderate height. It deflects more than a Thrie beam on impact, so it needs adequate working width behind the line.
The Thrie beam profile has three corrugations and a deeper section. It is specified where higher containment is needed — expressways with heavy commercial traffic, sharp curves, hill roads with steep drops, and anywhere a cross-over or run-off crash would be severe. It presents a larger contact face and is the standard profile for transitions to rigid concrete parapets at bridges.
Both profiles share the same construction logic: rail rolled from IS 2062 steel (3 mm, 2.67 mm on some specs) in 4.32 m panels; posts, commonly ISMC 150x75 channels, at 2 m centre-to-centre (1 m at hazards); spacer/blocking pieces; top of rail around 700–760 mm; and hot-dip galvanising to a 550 g/m² zinc coating.
The practical rule: match the profile to the containment level your risk assessment demands, and confirm the working-width class (W1–W8) the site can accommodate. Where the road transitions between profiles, use proper W-to-Thrie transition pieces — mismatched connections are a frequent inspection failure.
