Highway Guard Rail Post Types: Channel vs Z-Section
The posts carry the guardrail's performance. Here is how channel and Z/C-section posts compare, and what MoRTH expects on spacing and embedment.
Post sections. Indian projects commonly use a mild-steel channel — an ISMC 150x75 is typical for W beam guardrail — while Z-section and C-section posts are also used, particularly with heavier Thrie beam runs. The section governs how the post bends and releases on impact, which is part of how the whole system absorbs energy. Heavier containment levels call for heavier posts.
Spacing. The standard is 2 m centre-to-centre. At high-hazard locations — sharp curves, bridge approaches, steep drops — spacing is reduced to 1 m to stiffen the run and cut deflection. Post spacing is a design decision, not a site convenience, and inspectors measure it.
Embedment. Posts are driven to a design embedment that depends on soil and containment: broadly 1.1–1.8 m for W beam in normal soil (the product data for typical Indian projects gives about 1.6 m), and deeper — 1.8–2.0 m — for Thrie beam. In rock, posts are drilled and grouted rather than shortened. Short embedment is a classic inspection failure because it lets posts pull out on impact.
Spacer/blocking piece. Between post and rail sits a spacer that sets the offset and allows the rail to deflect without immediately loading the post — an easily overlooked but specified component.
Finish. Posts are hot-dip galvanised to a 550 g/m² zinc coating per IS 4759 / IS 2629, like the rail.
