Highway Guard Rail: MoRTH and IRC:119 Overview for Buyers
Highway guard rail is the umbrella term for W and Thrie beam guardrail systems. Here is how MoRTH and IRC:119 define what a compliant guardrail must be.
A highway guard rail is a system, not a single item. A compliant supply includes the corrugated rail, the posts, the spacer/blocking pieces, the splice and post bolts, the end terminals and — where the guardrail meets a bridge or culvert — the transition pieces to a rigid parapet. Leaving out transitions or end treatments is one of the most common reasons a guardrail supply is rejected at inspection.
The defining parameters are the same ones that govern any metal beam barrier: rail rolled from IS 2062 steel at 3 mm (2.67 mm on some specs) in 4.32 m panels; posts, commonly ISMC 150x75 channels, at 2 m centre-to-centre (1 m at hazards); top of rail at roughly 700–760 mm; and hot-dip galvanising to a 550 g/m² zinc coating per IS 4759 / IS 2629.
Two design ideas matter to buyers. First, containment level (IRC:119 / EN 1317: N1, N2, H1, H2…) tells you what vehicle the guardrail is designed to redirect. Second, working width (classes W1 to W8) tells you how much clear space the guardrail needs behind it to deflect on impact — critical where there is a hazard, drop or structure close behind the line.
