Highway Guard Rail Steel and Galvanising Standards

The Indian Standards behind a compliant highway guard rail — IS 2062 for steel and IS 4759 / IS 2629 for galvanising — and what each controls.

A compliant highway guard rail is built to a small, specific set of Indian Standards. Knowing them lets a buyer specify correctly and check what they receive against MoRTH Section 800 and IRC:119.

Steel: IS 2062. The rail and posts are fabricated from hot-rolled structural steel to IS 2062, commonly grade E250 (Fe410). This standard fixes yield and tensile strength, elongation, bend behaviour and chemistry — the properties that let the corrugated rail deform progressively and absorb energy rather than fracture. The mill test certificate is the proof, ideally traceable to the coil.

Galvanising: IS 4759 / IS 2629. Hot-dip galvanising to a 550 g/m² minimum zinc coating protects the steel through decades of roadside exposure. IS 4759 covers hot-dip zinc coating on structural steel and IS 2629 the practice and testing of galvanising; together they govern how the coating is applied and how coating mass is measured. Applied after fabrication, the coating protects cut edges and bolt holes.

Dimensions and geometry. Rail thickness (3 mm nominal, 2.67 mm on some specs), panel length (4.32 m), post section (e.g. ISMC 150x75) and hole patterns follow the crash-tested design referenced in IRC:119 and MoRTH — dimensional records confirm them.

Fasteners and delineation. Galvanised high-tensile bolts, and reflectors/delineators to IRC:35 / IRC:79.

Why the standards matter together. Correct steel with poor galvanising rusts early; good galvanising on under-grade steel deforms unpredictably; correct material at the wrong dimensions fails inspection. A compliant guardrail needs all of them, evidenced by certificates.

Metal Beam Barriers manufactures highway guard rail systems to IS 2062 steel and IS 4759 / IS 2629 galvanising, and supplies the mill test, coating-mass and dimensional documentation for tender compliance. Send your specification for a factory-direct quotation.
