Highway Guard Rail Reflectors, Delineators and Night Visibility

A guardrail guides as well as restrains. Here is how reflectors and delineators on a highway guard rail are specified for night and poor-weather visibility.

A highway guard rail earns half its value in daylight, restraining errant vehicles — and the other half at night, guiding drivers along the road's line before contact is ever needed. Reflectors and delineators are what deliver that guidance, and they are specified under IRC guidance (IRC:35, IRC:79) with MoRTH Section 800.

The visibility job. Retro-reflective delineators fixed to guardrail posts or the rail return headlight beams to the driver, so the continuous line of the guardrail is visible at a distance. On curves, crests and in rain or fog, this preview of the alignment is what keeps drivers within the carriageway — the barrier's physical restraint is the last line of defence, not the first.

Colour, spacing and pattern. Delineator colour and spacing follow the delineation guidelines and the project specification, tightened on curves so the reflective line reads as continuous at highway speed. Roadside guardrails carry delineation toward the traffic they protect; median guardrails carry reflectors visible to the relevant carriageway(s).

Durability and replacement. Roadside reflectors face dust, spray and impact debris. They are mounted so their retro-reflective faces can be cleaned or replaced without dismantling the guardrail, which keeps night visibility maintainable over the barrier's life.

Inspection. Presence, colour, spacing and secure fixing of reflectors are part of guardrail acceptance and a frequent punch-list item when omitted.

All of this sits on the standard guardrail build: IS 2062 steel, 3 mm rail, ISMC 150x75 posts, hot-dip galvanising to 550 g/m².
