Highway Guard Rail Inspection Checklist for Projects
A practical acceptance checklist for a highway guard rail installation, mapped to the MoRTH and IRC:119 items an inspector actually checks.
Material and finish. Mill test certificates confirming IS 2062 steel; coating-mass reports confirming the 550 g/m² hot-dip galvanised zinc coating (IS 4759 / IS 2629); dimensional records confirming rail thickness (3 mm, or 2.67 mm per spec), panel length (4.32 m) and post section.
Posts and embedment. Post section as specified; spacing correct (2 m, reduced to 1 m at hazards); driven embedment to the design depth (drill-and-grout in rock, not shortened posts); each post plumb and at correct top level.
Rail and geometry. Top-of-rail height uniform and correct (~700–760 mm for W beam); lap/splice direction following traffic flow; spacer/blocking pieces present; bolts galvanised and torqued to specification.
Ends, transitions and continuity. Approved end terminals at every run end (no bare rail ends); designed transitions at all structures and profile changes; continuous rail height through transitions; secure anchorage to parapets.
Delineation. Reflectors/delineators present, correct colour, at the specified spacing, securely fixed (IRC:35 / IRC:79).
Coating integrity. Any site-drilled or cut steel treated with approved zinc-rich repair.
Documentation. The certificate set assembled and formatted for the project's inspection regime (factory, third-party or site).
Running this checklist as a pre-inspection walk catches the common failures — short embedment, low coating mass, missing transitions and bare ends — before they cost time.
