Highway Guard Rail BOQ, Rate Analysis and Procurement
How to build a defensible highway guard rail BOQ and procure it well — components to itemise, standards to cite and what to ask every supplier.
Itemise the system. A guard rail rate should cover the complete system: rail, posts, spacer/blocking pieces, splice and post bolts, end terminals, structure transitions and reflectors. Decide whether your rate is 'supply only', 'supply and install', or 'FOR site', and state it — most disputes come from an unstated scope. Price terminals and transitions as separate items with counts, since they vary by location.
Cite the standards. Reference MoRTH Section 800 (clause 810), IRC:119, IS 2062 (steel) and IS 4759 / IS 2629 (galvanising). This lets every bidder quote to the same requirement and lets you compare like with like.
State performance and parameters. Containment level, working-width class the site allows (W1–W8), rail thickness (3 mm or 2.67 mm), post section and spacing, embedment for the soil, top-of-rail height, and the 550 g/m² coating.
Quantify from chainage. Estimate running metres by chainage; count terminals and transitions by location; add a maintenance-spares allowance if the client wants one.
What to ask suppliers. Are they the manufacturer or a trader? In-house galvanising or outsourced? Lead time for your quantity; packaging and freight terms; the certificate set they provide; and their ability to handle bulk and urgent tender-time dispatch.
