Thrie Beam Crash Barrier: When MoRTH Requires the Heavier Profile
The Thrie beam adds a third corrugation for higher containment. Here is where MoRTH and IRC:119 call for it instead of a W Beam.
Under IRC:119, barriers are classified by containment level (following the EN 1317 framework adopted in India): normal containment N1 and N2 for cars up to about 1500 kg, and higher containment H1, H2 and above for heavy goods vehicles and buses. The W Beam typically serves normal-containment locations; the Thrie beam is specified where higher containment (broadly H1 and up) is required by the project's risk assessment.
MoRTH and IRC:119 point to the Thrie beam at high-consequence locations: high-speed expressways with significant heavy-vehicle traffic, sharp curves, bridge approaches, hill roads with steep drops, and medians where a cross-over crash would be catastrophic. It is also the profile used in transitions from flexible barrier to a rigid concrete parapet.
The Thrie beam rail is rolled to 3 mm from IS 2062 steel in 4.32 m panels, mounted on heavier posts with deeper embedment (commonly 1.8–2.0 m depending on soil), and hot-dip galvanised to a 550 g/m² zinc coating like the W Beam. Because the section and posts are heavier, a Thrie beam run costs more per running metre — a premium that is justified precisely where containment performance affects survivability.
