Thrie Beam Crash Barrier Specifications and Dimensions

The Thrie beam's three-corrugation profile, rail thickness, post section and embedment — the specification lines a consultant will inspect.

The Thrie beam crash barrier is defined by its three-corrugation rail, and every specification for it starts from that deeper profile. Under MoRTH Section 800 and IRC:119, the Thrie beam is the go-to profile where higher containment is required.

Rail: a three-corrugation section rolled from IS 2062 steel, 3 mm thick, supplied in 4.32 m panels that lap and splice into a continuous run. The deeper section presents a taller contact face than a W Beam, which is exactly why it handles buses and trucks better.

Posts and embedment: the Thrie beam uses heavier posts than a W Beam — commonly a heavy channel or Z/C section — and deeper embedment, typically 1.8–2.0 m depending on soil and the containment level required. Post spacing follows the design, usually 2 m centre-to-centre and reduced at hazards. A spacer/blocking piece offsets the rail from the post.

Height and geometry: the taller rail is set so the barrier presents its full three-corrugation face to an impacting vehicle; the exact top-of-rail height follows the IRC:119 design for the chosen containment level.

Containment and working width: the Thrie beam is generally specified for higher-containment classes (H1 and above under IRC:119 / EN 1317), and your specification should state both the containment level and the working-width class (W1–W8) the site can accommodate behind the rail.

Finish: hot-dip galvanising to a 550 g/m² zinc coating per IS 4759 / IS 2629, with galvanised high-tensile bolts.

Metal Beam Barriers manufactures Thrie beam crash barriers to these dimensions, together with W-to-Thrie transition pieces and terminals, all to IRC:119 and MoRTH Section 800. Send your alignment and traffic details for a specification-matched quotation.
