Thrie Beam Crash Barrier Galvanising and Corrosion Protection

The Thrie beam's heavier steel deserves the same 550 g/m² galvanised protection as any barrier. Here is how corrosion protection is specified and verified.

A Thrie beam crash barrier represents a larger investment in steel than a W Beam, which makes its corrosion protection just as important — arguably more so, given the high-consequence locations where Thrie beams are installed. MoRTH Section 800 requires galvanising, with IS 4759 / IS 2629 governing the method and measurement.

The coating. All Thrie beam components — the three-corrugation rail, the heavy posts, the spacers and fasteners — are hot-dip galvanised to a minimum 550 g/m² zinc coating. The molten-zinc immersion forms a metallurgically bonded layer that protects the steel both as a physical barrier and sacrificially, the zinc corroding in preference to the steel.

After fabrication. Galvanising is applied after the rail is rolled and the posts are cut and drilled, so cut edges, bolt holes and any welds are coated. This matters most on the Thrie beam's heavier connections, where more cut and drilled steel is exposed.

Why it matters at Thrie-beam locations. Thrie beams sit at bridge approaches, hill roads, ghats and heavy-traffic corridors — often the most corrosive environments, with spray, high humidity, coastal salt or freeze–thaw. The 550 g/m² coating is what delivers multi-decade life there without painting.

Verification and field care. Coating mass is confirmed by a coating-mass report (test methods per IS 2629 / IS 4759). Any site cutting or drilling is treated with an approved zinc-rich repair to restore protection at exposed steel.

Metal Beam Barriers hot-dip galvanises its Thrie beam crash barriers to a 550 g/m² minimum and supplies coating-mass reports with every consignment. Tell us your corridor's exposure conditions for a corrosion-appropriate, factory-direct quotation.
